Growing up the son of one of Mexico’s national artists and a renowned journalist in Mexico City, it is no wonder that Shum Prats’ career followed an artistic path. As a child, he learned sculpting and painting at the hand of his father, Ramon Prats Ventos, and the art of storytelling from his mother, Dorothy Prats. His home was a gathering point for notable artists, poets, and politicians who held passionate discussions about art and politics that ran long into the night. The creative seeds were sown early and deep.
Shum began his formal fine arts education at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico, where he earned a scholarship to study at the prestigious Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, Spain. He continued his schooling in the United States, studying in Florida and Utah before settling in Denver, a sister city to his hometown of Cuernavaca, Mexico. He worked at Denver agencies McClain Finlon, 23airmail, and The Solis Group before taking the post of creative director for rabble+rouser in 2006. His experience is wide and varied, spanning the range from illustration to direct mail to environmental design. Shum has created award-winning and effective communications for some of the country’s most recognized brands including Apple, United Airlines, NFL, Six Flags, Qwest, Vail Resorts, Weber, Tommy Bahama, Helly Hansen, Buck Knives, O’Neill, The North Face, Smith Optics, American Red Cross, and more.
